Tristan Wirfs Adds to Drake Relays History

Tristan Wirfs became the first athlete in 25 years to sweep the High School Boys throwing events. On Thursday night, Wirfs was awarded as the Drake Relays Shot Put Champion with a 66-3.50. The Mount Vernon senior entered the competition ranked 2nd behind Nick Phelps of KP-WC. Wirfs came back on Friday morning in cold, rainy weather to win the Boys Discus Throw. He entered the competition ranked 6th in the State with a season-best of 175-5. He threw a huge personal best of 190-1, far exceeding the next finisher, Nick Phelps, who threw a 176-7. Wirfs will look to get his 2nd 4A State Championship in both events after winning both at the 2016 Iowa State High School Track & Field Championships. His throw in the Shot Put is over 6 feet farther than his throw to win the State Championship last year, while his throw in the Discus is nearly 5 feet farther than last year's at State.
