Salute To Seniors: Nathan Jubran - Bishop Kenny HS

The 2017-2018 school year has provided some great highlights in both cross country and track across the Sunshine State. In the coming weeks many of our seniors will head out to start their college careers both athletically and academically. We wanted to salute them one more time in this special feature and say thank you for your support over the years.

Today we salute Bishop Kenny senior Nathan Jubran.

What was your most memorable race or moment?

My most memorable race or moment would be winning districts my sophomore year in cross country, which started the rivalry between me and the Bolles boys throughout my high school career.

Who was your biggest competition over the past four years?

My most challenging competition over the past four years would be the Bolles boys. For cross country and the longer track races, Charles Hicks was my biggest rival and for shorter events such as the mile, Chase Rivera was my biggest competition.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was winning the 3200 meter race this year at states. I came into the race seeded second and knowing that, mentally prepared for a dog fight, between Charles Hicks and Paul Stafford. Ultimately, the mental preparation was worthwhile and the victory was bitter sweet.

If you could change anything about your high school career what would it be?

If I could do my high school career all over again, I would change the fact that I did football instead of cross country freshmen year.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

The most difficult obstacles I had to overcome in my high school career was doing most of my running workouts and long runs on my own due to the large gap between me and the second guy on our team.

What will you miss the most?

What I will miss the most is the every day camaraderie with some of my old teammates and the week long camp we attended every summer at Brevard, North Carolina.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

My advice that I would give to younger athletes would be not to dwell on the   failures you may have  in races or workouts, but to use those failures as motivation for success, especially when you don't feel like finishing the last rep of a workout or feel like slowing down in a race.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall goals?

My coach's influence on my performance was huge in my high school career. Coach Curran was very helpful with race planning and visualization and always had an array of challenging workouts to simulate the pain of races. He also encouraged me to not get caught up in the competition but rather focus on myself and to enjoy the progression of my running career. Throughout my four years with him he was always positive and encouraged us to make season goals before the start of every season and make note of when we surpassed or met them.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to say thank you to my mom, who was my biggest fan throughout the years and encouraged me to run track and cross country my freshmen year, even though I did not listen to her. I would like to thank Coach Curran for all the time and dedication that he has invested in making his distance athletes the best they can possibly be. I would also like to thank  Coach James, who was my defensive back  football coach and was the one who really helped me to  make the transition from football to track. I would like to thank Coach Mike and Coach Lewis for becoming a part of the Kenny family this year and for being so approachable and wise in all of the advice they had given me for not only races, but for life in general. In addition, I would like to thank my father for always being there for me and for helping me bounce back whenever I had a bad performance.

What are your college plans?

I plan to run both cross country and track for the University of North Florida and pursue a psychology major.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Enjoy the journey.
