WHAT'S AHEAD: The Drake women's track and field team will compete at the Iowa State Classic Friday and Saturday. Action starts at 1:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
LAST YEAR: Senior Nicole Braunsdorf (achieved an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark after finishing fourth in the 3,000-meter run to highlight action for the Drake women's track and field team at the 2009 Iowa State Classic. Braunsdorf, an all-Missouri Valley Conference performer, ran the second fastest time in school history in the 3,000 being timed in 9 minutes 33.48 seconds. Drake sophomore Casey McDermott (Newton, Iowa) was 16th in 10:00.63.
A LOOK BACK: Junior Casey McDermott was third in the invitational mile to highlight action for the Drake women's track and field at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational last Saturday in Lincoln, Neb. McDermott was clocked in four minutes 58.17 seconds.
Junior Tyse Samani (Kansas City, Mo.) was fifth in the high jump, soaring five feet 7 inches. Junior Kara McCartney (Elgin, Iowa) was fifth in the 800 in 2:16.02, while sophomore Kirsten Lake (Parker, Colo.) was 13th in 2:19.04.
Junior Clarissa LaFlora (Kewanee, Ill.) was 11th in the 600 yard run in 1:28.42. Katie Coomer (Overland Park, Kan.) was 12th in the mile in 5:16.96. Senior Tara Scieszinski (Albia, Iowa) was 14th in the 3,000 (10:40.67) and senior Courtney Heinz (St. Paul, Minn.) was 18th (11:08.68).
