Bailey Nock, the 2016 Iowa State High School Cross Country Champion proved to be starting the season strong with a 4:51.64 1500M, winning the event by a 4-second gap. Following behind the junior was Helen Gould of Valley (4:55.68) who outkicked Logan Akason of Waukee (4:55.81).
In the 200M dash, the heats were staggered well with each heat's winner taking their respective overall place in the top three. Grace Matera of Valley was the overall winner with a time of 27.28, while Morgan Sterrett of Cedar Falls took 2nd (27.79) and Addie Drees of Waukee took 3rd (28.12).
The girls' 3K had a loaded first heat, including the 4th place finisher at Cross Country State this past year, Gabby Skopec of Iowa City West, who placed second in the event with a 11:13.51. Ahead of her was Reagan Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington, crossing the line in 11:04.57.
Laurel Hoogensen of Des Moines Lincoln was the standout in the 400M Dash, being the only athlete of 7 heats to break the 1:00 mark, finishing with a time of 59.82.
In the relay events, Waukee was a strong force, placing in the top-2 for all three relays - the 4x200, 4x400, and 4x800. In the 4x200, Iowa City West took the 1st place spot with a 1:47.27, with Waukee placing 2nd in 1:49.16. The 4x400 and 4x800 were great battles between Waukee and Johnston, each taking a win in one. Waukee was the champion in the 4x400, destroying the competition with a 4:12.66, beating Johnston by over a 10-second gap. Johnston took 1st in the 4x800, however, out-kicking Waukee by less than one second, finishing in 10:02.55 versus 10:03.45. Waukee, who placed 2nd at the Iowa State High School Track & Field Championships last year in both the 4x200 and 4x800 will look to improve those to a win this spring. Johnston took 2nd in the 4x400 at State last year, but with a field of talented freshmen helping their team win the Iowa State High School Cross Country Championships, they will certainly be a force to contend with in each of the distance relays.
Valerie Welch, the senior stand-out from Iowa City West definitely did not disappoint at the Wartburg meet, taking the win in both the 55M Hurdles (8.49) and Long Jump (18-01.00). Welch, who is ranked 1st in the 400mH and in the long jump will look to improve on her 3rd place finishes in the Long Jump, 100mH, and 400mH from the Iowa State High School Track & Field Championships last year.
Alanna Muhammad of Waterloo East was the winner of the 55M Dash (7.56), beating 2nd-place Cheyenne Mitchell of Cedar Rapids Kennedy by just 3/100s of a second, with Katie Severt of Iowa City West close behind in 7.61.
Mackenzie Michael of Cedar Falls won the 800M run by a good margin in 2:25.22, with the battle for second being an exciting kick. Olivia Jenks from Ames edged out Carly Rahn of Gilbert with a 2:28.72 versus a 2:28.93.
The girls High Jump was won by Stacey Slaven of South Tama County in 5-05.00, with another great battle for second. Ellie Roquet of Johnston ended up taking 2nd place in a tie-breaker with Katie Beer of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, both jumping 5-03.00 for their highest jump.
Chandler Haight of Iowa City West was the champion of the shot put, approaching her 41-3 that earned a 3rd place finish at last year's State meet, throwing 41-06 at Wartburg. She was followed by Morgan Nealy of Waukee in 2nd (39-03.50) and Sara Martin of Charles City (36-06), who both competed at State last year as well.
