Tech Ready to Run at 2008 Drake Relays

DES MOINES -- Louisiana Tech's nationally renowned track and field squad will return to the track this weekend at arguably the most prestigious meet of the 2008 outdoor season at the Drake Relays.

"This is certainly a high class meet that we are looking forward to competing in," Tech head coach Gary Stanley said. "We are one of the schools that received an invitation to come which means our stay is practically taken care of. We are extremely appreciative of Drake and look forward to a good weekend."

Last weekend at the John McDonnell Invitational, freshman Chasidee Lewis finished second in the women's 100 finals with a time of 11.56 for a regional qualifying mark, which currently ranks her 26th in the entire nation and earned her WAC Athlete of the Week Honors.. Junior Antoinette Cobb ran a regional qualifying mark of 13.85 in the 100-hurdles.

Freshman Larry Jones took first place and NCAA Regional Qualifying Mark in the men's discus with a throw of 170 feet, 10 inches, while junior Michael Coleman took a third place finish in both the men's 100-meter dash and 200 meter dash invitationals with times of 10.41 seconds and 20.98, respectively. Coleman's time in the 100 was also regional qualifier.

Freshman Demonte Willis of Homer, La., ran a 47.28 in the men's 400 invitational which barely missed a regional qualifying mark much like junior Cory Denstel's time of 1:50.45 in the men's 800.

In the relays, the women's 4x400 team finished third at 3:45.09, while the 4x100 team also took third at 45.99.

Tech will return to action next weekend at the nationally renowned Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
