DES MOINES, Iowa – Iowa State junior Daniel Murray and redshirt freshman Charlie Paul led the Cyclones at the Bulldog Classic Friday with a first and second place finish, respectively, in the men's 4,000-meter run. Cyclone senior Erin Penticoff led the women with a third-place finish in the women's 4,000-meter run.
“I think our team did a great job of going out and running together,” head coach Corey Ihmels said. “They competed really hard. It was great to see Dan Murray and Charlie Paul run well.”
The Cyclone men had five finishers in the top-10, including a fourth-place effort from junior Alex Whitesell. The Iowa State women took four out of the top-10 spots, including fifth-place finish from redshirt freshman Kayla Marsh.
“It was a great start to the season for our team,” Ihmels said. "This should set the tone for the rest of the year.”
The Iowa State cross country team will next play host to the Iowa Intercollegiate Saturday, Sept. 19 at the ISU Cross Country Course. This will be the first time Iowa State seniors Lisa Koll and Grace Kemmey will compete in a cross country meet for Iowa State since Nov. 19, 2007, when the duo finished 18th and 22nd, respectively, at the 2007 NCAA Cross Country Championship.
Running unattached, Koll and Kemmey finished first and second, respectively, last year at the 2008 Iowa Intercollegiate. Both redshirted the 2008 cross country season. A post-meet recap will be available on cyclones.com.
