Samani Ties For High Jump Title At Jayhawk Invitational

LAWRENCE, KAN. -- Junior Tyse Samani (Kansas City, Mo.) tied for first in the high jump, while junior Ari Curtis (Fort Collins, Colo.) placed second in the pentathlon to highlight action for the Drake women's track and field team at the Jayhawk Invitational Friday.

Samani leaped five feet 5 inches. Curtis scored 3,439 points, winning the 800-meter run in two minutes 20 seconds, while placing second in the high jump (5-2.25). She was third in the long jump (17-3.5) and third in the 60 hurdles (9.43) while finishing fourth in the shot put (28-8.25).

Junior Casey McDermott (Newton, Iowa) was third in the 800-meter run in 2:18.2, while running a leg on Drake's distance medley relay which was third in 12:40.61. Other members of the distance medley relay were sophomore Kirsten Lake (Parker, Colo.), junior Kara McCartney (Elgin, Iowa) and junior Katie Coomer (Overland Park, Kan.).

Senior Caitlin Able (Aurora, Colo.), junior Beth Hamling (Council Bluffs, Iowa), junior Clarissa LaFlora (Kewanee, Ill.) and freshman Sarah Yeager (Ottumwa, Iowa) guided Drake to a fourth-place finish in the 4x400 relay in 4:05.24.

Junior Katie Coomer (Overland Park, Kan.) was fourth in the 800 (2:20.7) with Cammy Dole eighth (2:23.6). Freshman Briana Isom-Brummer (St. Louis, Mo.) was fifth in the 60 hurdles in 9.68.

Lake was sixth in the 600-meter dash (1:39.84), while McCartney was eighth (1:40.59). Sophomore Erika Sevigny (Olathe, Kan.) was seventh in the shot put at 39-8.75.

Junior Molly Scott (Kansas City, Mo.) tied for sixth in the pole vault, soaring 10-11.75, while junior Johanna Sprang (New Brighton, Minn.) tied for ninth at 10-6.

Junior Meredith Bell (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)  was ninth in the 3,000 in 10:40.1, while senior Tara Scieszinski (Albia, Iowa) was 12th in 10.52.9. Freshman Elle Yesnes  (Hopkins, Minn.) was 18th in 11:31.1. LaFlora was 11th in the 400 in 1:01.67. Hamling was 14th in the 200 in a hand-held time of 26.3, while Able was 15th in 26.7.
