WHAT'S AHEAD: The Drake men's track and field team will compete at the Iowa State Classic Friday and Saturday. Action starts at 1:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

LAST YEAR: Marcus Gaines finished fifth in the long jump at 23 feet 7.5 inches to highlight action for the Drake track and field teams at the 2009 Iowa State Classic. Senior Leyden Tolhurst finished fifth in the mile in four minutes 7.43 seconds. Then freshman Colin Hagan (Wichita, Kan.) won the unseeded men's 3,000-meter run in 8:34.34.

A LOOK BACK:  Senior Jeff Grassmeyer (Fremont, Neb.) made a successful homecoming by placing fourth in the invitational mile for the Drake men's track and field team at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational last Saturday in Lincoln, Neb. Grassmeyer was clocked in four minutes 11.28 seconds.
Senior Kevin Earl (Overland Park, Kan.) was sixth in the 800 in 1:55.52, while sophomore Charlie Lapham (Golden Valley, Minn.) was 10th in 1:56.02.
Junior Brandon Lewis (Plymouth, Minn.) was 10th in the 1,000-meter run in 2:37.40. Sophomore Josh Buschling (Washington, Mo.) was 14th in the 3,000 in 8:56.01.
