DES MOINES, IOWA -- Former Drake standout Matt
Gabrielson will compete in the 2011 Bupa Great Edinburgh International Cross
Country meet in Scotland as a member of the U.S. men's cross country team. The
nine-member U.S. squad will compete against other international teams this
Saturday (Jan. 8).
Gabrielson has previously represented the U.S. at
the International Association of Athletes Federation World Cross Country
Championships men's 12k in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Last year, he was 10th at
the USA Cross Country Championships in Spokane, Wash. Gabrielson also was
a member of the U.S. team at the 2009 IAAF World Outdoor Championships where he
competed in the marathon.
Gabrielson, a Belmond, Iowa native, was a five-time
Missouri Valley Conference champion. He won the 3000 indoor, the 3000 steeplechase
outdoors and was part of three winning indoor distance medley relays.
Gabrielson holds the Drake indoor school record in the 3000 with a time of
8:06.44 set in 2000. He also was a 12-time All-Missouri Valley Conference
Performer and a Cross Country Academic All-American.
