AMES, IOWA - Sophomore Isaac Twombly (Baldwin, Kan.) broke the Drake indoor weight throw record with a throw of 56 feet 4.50 inches for the men's track and field team at the Iowa State Open.
Twombly's toss, which netted him a fourth place finish, smashed the former Drake record held by Eric Bumgardner, which was 45-0.
"We are pretty excited about him," commented Drake head coach Natasha Brown. "It is remarkable for him to pick up the weight throw and to be successful in his first meet of the season."
Junior Jon DeGrave (Lake Villa, Ill.) was 11th in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.17. Freshman Brett Wright (Longmont, Colo.) placed 28th in 22.52.
"For Jon to continue and lower his time is impressive," said Brown. "Its tricky is because he is a 400 meter hurdler competing in a sprint. We are excited with his progress and his speed. It shows that his time from last week was not a fluke."
Ben Jaskowiak (Madison, Wis.) was 21st in the seeded 5,000 meter race as the junior was clocked in 15:30.95. Sophomore Mike Rodriguez (Chanhassen, Minn.) placed third in the non-seeded 5,000 race as he crossed the finish line in 15:50.87, while senior Mike Bumgarner (Rosemount, Minn.) race a time of 15:59.88 to place ninth.
Sophomore Dan Karys (Bartlett, Ill.) leapt 21-11.75 to finish 14th in the long jump.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday to compete in the second day of events at the Iowa State Open. The first event of the day, the non-seeded women's 3,000 meter race, will start at 10 a.m. at the Lied Recreation Center.
