CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Nate Mueller of Adel-Desoto-Minburn and West Des Moines Dowling Catholic's Jackson Heidesch returned to the track in grand fashion Tuesday here at the Dickinson Relays inside Northern Iowa's UNI-Dome. It represented the first sanctioned high school track meet in the state since the 2019 state meet with last season being wiped out by COVID-19.
Mueller (14:15.03) finished first and Heidesch (4:23.00) was the runner-up in the 1600 meters. Both of those times bested the Blue Standard cutoff of 4:24 needed to qualify for the April 22 Drake Relays in Des Moines.
Abu Sama from Southeast Polk claimed the long jump with a mark of 22-09.25 with Cedar Rapids Kennedy's Drew Bartels' distance of 22:06.00 good for second. Both student-athletes exceeded the Blue Standard of 22-04.
Ames' Aniey Akok (2:01.02) won the 800. Chase Knoche (2:01.17) from Calamus Wheatland and Bellevue Community's Brady Griebel (2:01.75) finished second and third, respectively. All were in striking range of the Blue Standard (1:56.30).
Mid-Prairie's Cain Brown captured the high jump with a leap of 6-05, not far off the Blue Standard of 6-07.
