Lightning's Ashlyn Keeney Grabs Gold


IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa City Liberty High won both team titles Thursday here at the Bob Brown Classic hosted by Iowa City Regina.  Western Dubuque was the runner-up in the girls race, while Mount Vernon-Lisbon grabbed second on the boys side. 

Liberty junior Ashlyn Keeney took first in a time of 19:33 while teammate Cami Mac (19:43) finished second in leading their team to 35 points. Western Dubuque had 87 to end up 10 points better than third-place Solon. The Bobcats' Alyssa Klein (20:46) and Lauren Klein (20:56) crossed the tape third and fourth, respectively. 

Tipton's Caleb Shumaker (16:46) took the gold in the boys race and helped his team to a third-place finish with 125 points. Bowen Gryp (17:08) and Christian Montover (17:10) ended up second and third, respectively, for victorious Liberty. 

The schools ran in two groups for the girls and boys with varsity and junior varsity competing together. Places were decided by combining the best times of runners in each group.
