“Projected Top 2012 Iowa High School Track & Field Athletes” Interview – Zach Buchheit, Pella HS

“Projected Top 2012 Iowa High School Track & Field Athletes” Interview – Zach Buchheit, Pella HS

1.      When & how did you get started in track & field?   I first started running track in middle school.  In high school I opted out of running and began playing varsity soccer for our school.  I continued to play only soccer until my junior season when I dual sported playing both soccer and track. This season is actually different; my mind set has changed and I am just running.

2.      Person/people most influential to your success in track & field?  I would have to give the most credit to my cross country and track coach, Coach Cutler.  He has always been there throughout my training and is a positive role model, not only in season but outside of athletics as well.

3.      Your favorite track & field event(s)?  I actually do not have a favorite event.  I just enjoy running in general.  If there is a long distance race, I will most likely enjoy it.

4.      Your track & field event coach(es)?  The coach that I have dealt with most is our distance coach, Coach Cutler.

5.       Keys to your successful track & field training program?  I think the key to my success in my training program is the relaxed mindset that I create.  It allows me to stay interested in what I am doing, and helps me build up the edge for the season.

6.      Your favorite track & field meet?  Thus far my favorite meet has been State.  It was great experience last year even though I didn't get to accomplish anywhere near what I am capable of.  So I am looking forward to coming out this year with a little bit of a chip on my shoulder to show what I am capable of.

7.      Track & field athlete(s) you most enjoy competing against?  Track is pretty similar in a sense to XC.  I know quite a few of the distance runners throughout the state; so it’s great to see and run against the same guys from state XC.

8.      Your greatest experience in track & field so far?  Unfortunately I haven't been able to create a huge background with the track team and getting to fully experience our team.  But I have high hopes for the season and creating memories that I will carry throughout my life.

9.      Goals for the 2012 track & field season?   My goals consist of what I would think would be the same for many others in the state, to compete very well at Drake and State. Also I am setting the bar very high in hoping that I can get a time under 9:10 in the two mile and under 4:15 in the 1600.

10.    Long-term goals in track & field?  I just want to continue running after high school and continue my career.  Wherever I end up I will be happy.
