IOWA CITY, Iowa - Friday's Class 4A District 5 meet here at John Raffensperger Track featured a tight race on the girls' side and a dominant performance by the Iowa City West High boys.
The Trojans scores 138 points to outdistance Cedar Rapids Kennedy (120) and host Iowa City High (110), who finished second and third, respectively. Gabe Caruthers powered the West win with victories in the 100, 200 and 400, and anchored the sprint medley relay team. Teammate Kolby Greiner backed him up gold in the 1600 and 3000.
West also picked up victories in the high jump (Marcus Morgan, 6-4) and shot put (Landon Green, 54-11).
Iowa City Liberty freshman Ashlyn Keeney put on a show to match Caruthers, winning three individual races (800, 1600, 3000) and anchoring a victorious relay (distance medley). That effort wasn't enough to carry the Lightning to victory, however.
Host City High scored 129 points to slip by Liberty (123) for the girls team title. West (120) finished a close third. The Little Hawks claimed victory in the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400. Caroline Schaeckenbach, who anchored the winning 4x400, also took gold in the 400 hurdles.
West's Peyton Steva ran well, winning the 200, 100 hurdles and anchoring the victorious shuttle hurdle relay.
