DES MOINES, Iowa - Day 2 of the state track meet here at Drake Stadium once again was affected by the elements. Events were delayed an hour and many of them took place in a steady rain on Friday.
But the show must go on.
And it did.
Darien Porter waited an extra day for his ultimate performance. The Bettendorf senior and the rest of the Class 4A 400 were lined up at their starting blocks Thursday night when the meet was postponed.
The delay provided an even sweeter accomplishment for Porter, who blistered the blue oval in a state-record time of 46.99. He broke the mark of 47.01 Iowa City High's Calvin Davis set back in 2002. Iowa City West's Gabe Caruthers (47.38) pushed Porter.
Lynnville-Sully's Tyson Vander Linden (1A), Milford Okoboji's Ethan Albright (2A), Nevada's Joven Nelson (3A) and Dowling Catholic's Thai Thompson (4A) captured championship in the 400 hurdles on the boys side. Elkader Central's Ciera Deitchler (1A), Unity Christian's Mikayla Turek (2A), Glenwood's Janette Schraft (3A) and Iowa City High's Caroline Schaeckenbach (4A) won the girls' races.
After winning its first ever state race in the 4x800 on Thursday, the Lansing Kee girls came back a day later for a victory in the 1A distance medley.
West Des Moines Valley's boys set a state record in the 4x200.
