Cedar Rapids Prairie Sweeps Races at West Invitational



IOWA CITY, Iowa - Jack Pendergast and Mary Cline have been slowed by poor health this season. They showed Tuesday here at the West High Invitational that injuries can't keep them down. 

Pendergast won the boys race and led Cedar Rapids Prairie to the team title. He finished in 16:22 and the Hawks scored 81 points, which was aided by a second-place finish from Hunter Kalous (16:33). Johnston (85) and West (90) came in second and third, respectively. 

Lewis Kleman from Cedar Rapids Washington took third in the boys race in a time of 16:40. West's Nicolo Schianchi was fourth (16:45), while Ankeny Centennial's Gabriel Vicker wound up fifth (16:52). 

Cline, who has been dealing with a foot issue, crossed the finish line in 19:56. Gabby Cortez (20:03) and Laurdyn Meyer (20:08), finished second and third, respectively, leading Cedar Rapids Prairie to the girls title. 

The Hawks scored 49 to edge second-place Dubuque Hempstead by one point. Centennial was next with 54. 

Hempstead's Hannah Brown ended up fourth in a time of 20:24. Prairie's Carli Reittinger came in fifth (20:46).
