IOWA CITY, Iowa - The annual Iowa City West High Early Bird meet usually contested in late August kept its name but didn't live up to it when the rescheduled race was held Thursday here at the Kickers Soccer Complex. The Dubuque Senior girls and the Iowa City Liberty boys came out on top.
Lillian Schmidt (19:23) continued her successful season by finishing first for Dubuque Senior, which scored 24 points. Pleasant Valley took second with 40, and host West High claimed third with 74.
Schmidt was followed across the finish line by teammate Izzy Gorton (19:50). Pleasant Valley's Bella D'Antico (20:05) and Lizzie McVey (20:41), and Maddie Negley (20:47) of West rounded out the Top 5.
Kole Sommer (16:30) cruised to victory, while teammate Tarun Vedula (16:58) captured second. Senior's Conner Kilgore (17:01.4) grabbed third, City's Ford Washburn (17:01.6) finished fourth and Liberty's Aidan Decker (17:10) took fifth.
Liberty won the boys race with 41 points. City (62) and Pleasant Valley (71) finished second and third, respectively.
