6/24 Bulletin -  Houlihan qualifies for finals in USA Junior Nationals

 

Shelby Houlihan, recent graduate of Sioux City East HS, today qualified for the 800m and 1500m finals in the USA Junior Championships, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon.  Shelby was 3rd of 22 in the 800 semifinal heats, time – 2:08.71, to advance to the eight woman final to be contested 6/25.  The fastest time in the semifinals was by Kenyetta Iyevbele, North Carolina State University, 2:08.34.  Houlihan also qualified for the 1500m final, finishing 4th of 24, time -  4:26.39, to advance to the championship field of eight.  The top 1500 qualifier was Cory McGee, University of Florida, 4:25.90.

The USA Junior Championships is the highest level meet available for U.S. high school T&F athletes, serving as the qualifier for the USA National Junior Team 2011.  The top two in each event of the Championships will participate in the Pan American Junior Championships, Miramar, Florida  July 22-24.  To be eligible to compete in the Junior Championships, athletes can be up to 19 years of age and must meet rigid qualifying standards.  Therefore, the meet includes mostly college freshman and sophomores, with only the best of the nation’s high school runners, jumpers, throwers, and multi-eventers qualifying.

 

Logan-Magnolia’s Alex Gochenour, who was fourth after the first day (6/23)of the heptathlon, was injured in the initial event (LJ) of the final day (6/24) and had to drop out of the competition.
