The Friday morning session of the state track began with a photo finish in the Girls
4A Distance Medley Relay between Iowa City West and Waukee. The two teams finished within half a second
of each other, with Iowa City West running a 4:03.21 and Waukee, a close second,
in 4:03.49. The runners competing for
Iowa City West's DMR have had a busy championship weekend already, as Bailey
Nock previously took home the gold in the Girls 3000m on Thursday and Welch
later went on to win the Girls long jump, as well as place 3rd in
the Girls 400m hurdles. In the Boys 4A
Distance Medley Relay, Matt Fraizer, the Notre Dame commit, helped win Dowling
Catholic the victory with a time of 3:27.74.
Right behind the Maroons was Indianola, Waukee and Johnston taking 2nd,
3rd and 4th, all finishing within a second or two behind
each other.
Nick Phelps came back to defend his 2A Boys Championship in the Discus after a great throw of 183-06, followed by Coy Kirkpatrick who threw 172-10. Phelps also defended his Shotput title on Thursday and has helped KP-WC take the lead in the team competition. In the girls 3A DMR, Decorah's win helped them close the gap on Assumption in the team standings, after Assumption middle-distance star Joy Ripslinger did not compete, resulting in their team placing fourth overall. Decorah took the win in 4:09.67, followed by Crestwood in 4:11.99. Ellie Friesen of Crestwood played a huge role in the DMR and will look to improve their team score in other races throughout the weekend.
At the end of Friday's 4A competition Iowa City West girls holds the 1st place position with 62 points. Not far behind is Waukee's girls team with 52 points for 2nd place. Following that position is Linn-Mar, Cedar Falls and Dowling. On the boy's side West Des Moines Valley leads with 53 points, followed by Waukee with 39 points. 3rd place is held by Cedar Falls and then in a tie for 4th place is Western Dubuque Epworth and Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The 1A girls team standings are Maple Valley-A-O in 1st place with 20 points, North Butler in 2nd with 18 points, followed by Sidney, Danville and East Mills. 1A boy's teams stand with Lisbon leading with 42 points. In 2nd place is AGWSR with 33 points, followed by Hudson, Pekin, and Saint Ansgar. In the 2A girls competition, Cascade-Western Dubuque holds the top spot at 27 points, followed closely by Mid-Prairie with 26 points. Mid-Prairie will look to the Hostetler sisters to help take over that top spot during Saturday's events. On the boys' side, KP-WC stands in first with a huge lead at 36 points, followed by Madrid with 27 points. Assumption holds solid in first for the 3A girls' after Joy Ripslinger's excellent performances so far this weekend, and will look to extend that lead as she competes in both the 800 and 1500 on Saturday. They lead with 37 points, while Decorah follows with 31 points. Pella is close behind in 3rd with 30 points. The 3A boys competition sits close with Marion leading at 42 points, followed by Mt. Vernon with 41. The two teams lead the rest of the teams by a large margin and will compete hard on Saturday to take the W.
