Top 5 Girls Performances from Drake Relays

1. Sydney Winger - 100m Hurdles

Winger set a Drake Relays record in the preliminaries with a time of 14.19, then came back in the finals to win overall in 14.31. Not only was the record a huge feat for the Waukee senior, but it is even more impressive considering she was born with heart defects, including a hole in her heart, and was told she would never be a track star.

2. Payton Wensel - 400m Hurdles

Another Drake Relays record was broken when Wensel ran 1:00.25, which also ranks 2nd all time in Iowa. The senior from Linn-Mar also placed second in the 800, was on the winning 4x100 team, and competed on the sprint medley team. It was a wide range of events, but the Iowa commit didn't let it phase her from competing, and winning.

3. Jamie Kofron - Shot Put & Discus

Kofron threw two big PR's to win both the Shot Put and Discus, with throws of 45-5.5 and 143-00, respectively. The junior from Tipton won the Discus by over 7 feet and PR'd by over 10 feet. By winning the Shot Put, Kofron beat Chandler Haight of Iowa City West who had achieved the Blue Standard, as well as Waukee's Kat Moody.

4. Darby Thomas - Long Jump

Though she competed in the 100m Dash, the 100m Hurdles, and the Long Jump, Thomas still had enough gas to achieve the win in the long jump with a margin of 9 inches with a length of 18-08.5 ahead of Iowa City West's Kitra Bell who jumped 17-11.5. This was her second Drake Relays win in a row in the event.

5. Ellie Friesen - 3000m

The senior from Crestwood got her first Drake Relays title running a 9:50 over Mid-Prairie's Anna Hostetler by 2 seconds. The next finisher was over 20 seconds back from the pair, but Friesen held Hostetler off with a strong finish and captured her flag.
