Ashlyn Keeney Begins Season with Victory


IOWA CITY, Iowa - Ashlyn Keeney has suffered through a serious eye infection and other ailments that have interrupted her training this summer. You wouldn't have known that Thursday watching the Iowa City Liberty sophomore run at the Iowa City West Early Bird Invitational here at the University of Iowa's Ashton Course. 

Keeney's winning time of 18:45 easily bested her Liberty teammate, Camille Mac, who finished in 19:19. McKenzie Logan of Liberty came in third (20:49). The trio just began their sophomore years. 

The Lightning scored 54 points, which was good for second place behind Bettendorf (41) in the team race. Bulldog sophomore Hannah Bientema led the way with a fourth-place finish (20:54). 

On the boys side, Iowa City Liberty emerged victorious with 34 points to cruise by second-place North Scott (64). Lightning juniors Bowen Gryp (17:05) and Jack Kinzer (17:06) finished second and third, respectively, to lead the way. 

Bettendorf's Nick Moore grabbed the individual title in a time of 17:00.
