IOWATFXC.COM Interview with Kevin Lewis

I.   When/how did you get started with your running?  I liked running the mile in gym class in grade school, and decided then that I wanted to run cross country and track once I was old enough.

II.  Describe the support for your running that you’ve received from your family?  My family is always willing to go to different post-season races/road races during the summer.  Also, my parents haven’t missed any of the races that I’ve run in.

III.  Describe the support for your running that you’ve received from your team, school, fans, others?  The whole community of Ottumwa seems to back me up really well, and are always wanting me to do well to represent our town.

IV.  Describe the help with your running that you’ve received from you coach(es)?  I learned what all is needed with training to become a faster runner from all of my coaches here.  The importance of both logging mileage and improving foot-speed during the off-season were made very clear to me by my coaches.

V.  Describe your training program (year-around?, mileage, type of training, emphasis).  I would do 40-50 miles a week early in the off-season building up to about 70 miles a week at the beginning of the season, then hold as close to 60 as possible during the season.  Trying to make every run gradually get faster and have an overall pace under 6 minutes per mile.

VI.  What has been your greatest thrill(s) from your running?  I really liked how the crowd got into it and rose to its feet and cheered a lot at the end of the 3200 at the state meet.  I wasn’t expecting that at all and it was an amazing feeling that I will always remember.

VII.  Competition plans for this summer?  I plan to run some small 5k’s, maybe the Bix, and the MidnightMadness 10k.

VIII.  How did you decide on the University of Iowa as your choice of universities?  I have always been an Iowa Hawkeyes fan, the college of engineering there felt like a nice fit, and I would really like to continue my running there for them and hopefully do some good stuff.

IX.  Expectations for the future -  running, academics, vacation?  Keep getting faster, and do well in my academics in college.
