Cross Country/Track and Field Announce First Signing Class of Peterson Era Tulane Press Release Aug 06, 2010

 NEW ORLEANS - When head coach Eric Peterson arrived at Tulane last fall he knew that he had a task ahead of him. He was already behind on recruiting and had put together a talented, but young coaching staff that was recruiting for the first time. With that said, all of the difficulty that he experienced early on has been washed away after announcing a 19-person recruiting class that will arrive on campus in a few short weeks to begin building the Green Wave cross country and track and field programs.

 HOUSTON - The foundation looks to be settling for the Tulane University track and field program under first year head coach Eric Peterson. The Green Wave had ten different athletes compete on the final day of the Conference USA Indoor Championships at Yeoman Fieldhouse on the University of Houston campus, with seven of those athletes holding freshman or sophomore status. Jamie Riles improved on her 400-meter times, finishing sixth in the finals, but improved on her career best mark that she set yesterday.

WACO, Texas - Sophomore Julia Whitrock placed 27th overall as the Tulane women's cross country team finished 15th of 21 teams at the NCAA South Central Regional Championship Saturday at Cottonwood Creek Golf Course in Waco, Texas. Whitrock posted a team of 22:09, an improvement of 40 seconds off her performance as a redshirt freshman last season at the 6K regional championships.

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Coach Eric Peterson was looking for two things out of his men's and women's cross country teams: improve upon its times and ability to run as a group. Fittingly, Saturday's Gulf Coast Stampede saw the Green Wave bunch up as a group, while nine of 14 student-athletes turned in season or personal bests. Tulane's women finished fourth, led by sophomore Johanna Gretschel, while sophomore Brian Lozes once again paced the men, to a sixth-place finish.

Peterson, a former distance runner at the University of Oregon, spent the previous 16 seasons at UCLA and will take over the Green Wave programs immediately.

New Orleans - The 2009 edition of the Tulane University Athletics Hall of Fame will feature three Green Wave All-America student-athletes from the early 2000's, including Michael AubreySolomon Kandie and Seth Marler, a two-sport female athlete in Mashandra Hall and George Sweeney, who served as the Tulane beatwriter for Times-Picayune and its predecessor newspapers for almost half a century, was the recipient of the Billy Slatten Award.
